The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

While the official provided no details on which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by the public and vowed to contest the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has used the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide critical services to the public nationwide,” said a national union president, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved before then.

At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.
