The former US president’s latest ultimatum to impose an further complete levy on products from China has been described as a “classic case” of American hypocrisy, as stated by the Chinese government.

A Commerce Ministry spokesperson additionally remarked that China could enact its own unrevealed “responsive actions” if the American leader carries out his pledge, adding that the country was “fearless” of a looming trade war.

This past Friday, Donald Trump hit back at Beijing’s move to tighten its rules for exports of critical elements, accusing Beijing of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the global community “hostage”.

Additionally, he threatened to withdraw from a scheduled meeting with Chinese leader Xi, which was expected to take place during a summit in the Republic of Korea in the coming weeks.

Trump’s comments on that day shook global markets, with the S&P 500 dropping nearly three percent, marking its biggest drop since April.

These statements renewed apprehensions of a trade conflict between the US and China.

Earlier this year, the two sides had consented to remove triple-digit tariffs on each other’s goods, which had led to concerns of commerce ceasing between the two nations.

Consequently, US tariffs on Chinese goods incurring an added 30% levy compared with the year’s onset, while US goods entering the country are subject to a ten percent duty.

Beijing’s recent statements – released by the Ministry of Commerce in the manner of official answers to press queries – reflected language from the height of the recent trade conflict.

They criticised American limits on exports on chips and semi-conductors while supporting the country’s own overseas sale regulations on rare earths as “routine measures” to safeguard state interests and that of every country.

Their representative stated that for “many years”, the United States had “broadened the definition” of state security, misused foreign shipment regulations and “enforced” discriminatory practices against Beijing.

“Resorting to trade levy ultimatums is not the right way to interact with the Chinese government,” the spokesperson said.

“Beijing’s stance” on a import duty dispute has remained consistent: we are not seeking one, but we are not afraid of one.”

Recently, the Chinese government declared it was strengthening overseas sale regulations on rare earths and further resources vital for cutting-edge industry.

The action was viewed as a important measure, as the state refines about ninety percent of the world’s rare earths, which are utilized in goods such as solar panels and handheld devices.

The recent comments from Washington and Beijing are being viewed by observers as a method of enhancing bargaining power in preparation for future trade talks.

Is not yet known whether a summit between Trump and China’s leader, scheduled at a high-level meeting in the Republic of Korea in the coming weeks, will go ahead.
