New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities issued video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt were reported.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
