Red Cross Accompanies Militant Group in Search for Bodies of Captives in Gaza

A Red Cross official stated that its representatives accompanied Hamas officials into areas of the Gaza Strip still under Israeli military authority to facilitate the search for the bodies of individuals held captive.

Truce Terms and Hostage Remains Return

As part of the truce negotiated by the United States, which began on October 10, Hamas is obligated to return the remains of all Israeli hostages promptly. As a reciprocal measure, the Israeli government has consented to hand over 15 Palestinian bodies for each Israeli.

The organization has so far handed back the remains of 15 of those taken hostage but zero in the past five days, as some of those remains are believed to be in areas past the yellow line marking Gaza’s ceasefire.

ICRC Involvement as Neutral Intermediary

“At the request of the involved sides, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) joined a participant in the hostilities as the group looked for the bodies of the deceased individuals beyond the IDF-designated ‘yellow line’,” stated a spokesperson for the committee.

She continued: “Those involved to the conflict established the procedures of the operation and delegated the ICRC to serve as a neutral intermediary. We was not involved in those negotiations.”

The official additionally clarified: “Our team was not involved in the physical hunt for the bodies nor does it engage in the retrieval of human remains.”

US Demand and Local Search Efforts

Recently, the US president issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the organization. “Hamas is going to have to start handing over the bodies of the deceased hostages, which include two Americans, quickly, or the other countries involved in this significant truce will take action,” he wrote on his social‑media platform.

As the 48-hour deadline neared, Hamas, accompanied by the Red Cross, teamed up with Egyptian teams, who were granted permission by Israeli authorities to search for bodies beyond the line indicating the Israeli military’s pullback inside the territory. An Israeli spokesperson said the Egyptian team would use heavy machinery and vehicles in the operation.

Official Confirmation and Media Reports

This development was supported by an source within Israel, who told Hebrew-language media that members of the group had been allowed to access areas of Gaza under Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control to look for the bodies of hostages, alongside Egypt’s and ICRC teams.

Footage released by a media outlet appeared to show members of a specialized group – part of the group’s armed faction responsible for holding hostages – accompanying a humanitarian transport in a specific location near a southern city, which is beyond IDF jurisdiction.

Challenges in Locating Hostage Remains

Efforts to locate for the bodies of individuals taken captive has become one of the most sensitive issues in the truce agreed between the two sides. Yet, the attempt to locate the remains has proved challenging from the beginning, given the existence of an approximate 60m tonnes of debris across the strip, where, as per health officials, at least 10,000 residents are listed as missing, trapped under the debris.

Conflicting Statements on Body Whereabouts

The group has stated it lacks information on the precise whereabouts of all the bodies, saying it has lost contact with several of its teams that had been holding the hostages and were allegedly killed during Israeli bombardments.

However, an Israeli government spokesperson asserted that the organization knew the locations of the remains. “Should the group made more of an effort, they would be able to retrieve the remains of our captives,” the spokesperson said.

US Stance and Weapons Surrender Discussions

While the US president has acknowledged that a portion of the remains are difficult to reach, he said that “the rest they can hand over now and, for unknown reasons, they are not.”

Washington has said it has received guarantees from Hamas that the group will surrender its arms, though no clear timeline has been set. The militant organisation remains hesitant to surrender its weapons without solid guarantees about the future of its members.
