The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song

This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at multiple agonizing backstories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

Overall, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.

This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
