The Showrunner Reveals He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the hit series reaching its finale—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Fan Response
One could easily to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and fan theories regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Will the creator Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff are not listening by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We have some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to throw out a good idea for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
